Uganda Hospitality & Food Service Skills Hub
Building Uganda's next generation hospitality workforce
A practical Skills Hub at Simba Safari Camp, developed with Great Lakes Collection and Great Lakes Foundation as a national demonstration model for competency-based hospitality education.

Why now
Uganda's tourism and hospitality industry is growing rapidly. New lodges, hotels and tourism investments are creating demand for skilled employees, yet the majority of the workforce has never had access to formal vocational training. The challenge is no longer creating jobs — it is making sure people have the skills and documentation required to succeed in them.
Building on more than six years of practical experience across East Africa, nOmy and its partners have initiated the development of the Uganda Hospitality & Food Service Skills Hub, together with Great Lakes Collection, Great Lakes Foundation and other regional stakeholders.
A hub, not another institution
Rather than creating another traditional training institution, the ambition is a practical Skills Hub where education, industry and employers work together to develop the skills the labour market actually demands.
The training hub will be established at Simba Safari Camp, owned by Great Lakes Collection, where existing facilities are upgraded and expanded to support practical hospitality education, food production training and professional instructor development.
Alongside the physical development of the hub, local instructors complete a comprehensive Training of Trainers programme, so knowledge remains locally anchored while maintaining international quality standards.
How it is delivered
The hub operates as a blended learning environment: practical classroom instruction combined with digital learning, competency assessment and continuous workplace documentation through the nOmy Learning Management System.
The programme is designed around real labour market demand rather than academic subjects. Initial modules include food hygiene, HACCP, food safety, culinary techniques, food handling, butchery, fish processing, sustainability, kitchen operations and hospitality service management. Every module combines theory with practical assessment and digital certification.
The first pilot implementation is expected between December 2026 and February 2027, following facility upgrades, instructor training and curriculum localisation.

Long-term vision
The Hub is designed as more than a training centre. Its long-term ambition is to become a nationally recognised model for hospitality workforce development, combining practical vocational education, digital certification and industry partnerships into one ecosystem that supports businesses, institutions and young professionals throughout their careers.
A core element is the Digital Skills Passport. Every learner builds a verified record of completed modules, practical competencies and workplace experience, creating a transparent pathway from Unskilled to Skilled to Certified to Employed.
For employers the passport is trusted documentation of competence, reducing recruitment risk and onboarding time. For learners it becomes a lifelong portfolio supporting career progression, further education and future employment.
